In Maria D. Avgerinou’s article "Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the 'Bain d’ Images' Era," she is speaking about the increased amount of digital images we see everyday and how it has affected the way we as a society interpret our information and data. Technology and digital media have become an everyday constant feature for 99% of the world and Avgerinou poses the idea of essentially a changed perspective on the importance of learning about these new and ever changing visual literary elements. I think a lot of times our culture either slanders the clutch hold technology has on all of us or they over praise the narrative of its benefits. We need to have a happy medium understanding in which we acknowledge and become aware of its effects but also its importance. Avgerinou speaks about this desire to re-frame the way we think about digital literary elements and suggests implementing a new series of classes/learning methods into schools in which these elements can be addressed, as well as better understood and recognized as a potential tool. Visual communication is advancing everyday and becoming a great thing. However, we must be educated on how to properly interpret, understand, and develop these images before we spread them. The image I have attached along with my response showcases a woman analyzing a digital image. She is curiously looking at it and taking in data/information. Now obviously this image is most likely located in a work environment and its her job to analyze this picture, but it plays along with the idea that Avgerinou is trying to convey of needing a more thoughtful protocol when it comes to interpreting images and how they interact with each other.
